Wow, I am super happy that I could win the first stage of Paris-Nice today! My team supported me like crazy. That gives confidence for the coming days, not just for me but also for the whole team.
The first stage was, as expected, very hectic and stressful. The wind and the forecasted rain needed our full attention for every one of the 154 km. We were permanently in danger of sidewinds. It was clear that the field would keep on falling apart.
About 50 km before the finish I found myself in the second group again. Then I got caught behind a crash. But in the end the field came together and on the climb five km before the finish I felt really good. With Dylan Teuns, I could join leaders Tiesj Benoot and Julian Alaphilippe and put in a good sprint. Now I have the first yellow lion of my career. Cool!
