Third place in the dusty Tuscan heat

The season has re-started. I am satisfied with my podium place on the Italian gravel race Strade Bianche. I would not have thought I would cope so well with the heat. It was measured at up to 40 degrees in the shade. The roughly 184km around Siena were extremely challenging and the dusty gravel sections were pretty dangerous. At times I could not even see the road because of the dust.

20 kilometers before the finish I made my attack, because I noticed that a lot of the others were pretty tired. But when Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) attacked only 7 kilometers later on an uphill gravel section, I had to let him go. I tried to catch him but unfortunately my former teammate Davide Formolo could not really take up the chase with me. Wout used all his 'cross qualities. Respect for his performance!

It feels good to race again and especially to be in the mix for the win. I am ready for the next races. On Wednesday the Tour of Poland starts.
